While it appears deceptively simple (it's basically a box with a hole in it), the hopper allows the construction of many advanced mechanisms. Items that fall into the top of the hopper are added to its inventory. If the hopper receives Mechanical power through a axle or hand crank mounted on the side of the hopper, items from the hopper inventory will start ejecting out the spout on the bottom of the hopper (and stop when power it cut). Items may be ejected into the air, directly into any other block that has an inventory (e.g. a Chest, a Dispenser or a Minecart with Chest) parked beneath it. A hopper with items in its inventory will send a signal to an adjacent Redstone Comparator.

Filtering
The Hopper also contains an extra inventory slot in which you may place various items that act as a "filter" on which items it will swallow. Filtering hoppers can be placed in a trench so water will wash Items/Drops over every hopper.
+
Item Filtering
 +
The hopper also contains an extra inventory slot in which you may place various items that act as a filter so you can determine what items can enter the hopper inventory. By combining multiple hoppers with different filters and a stream of water, you can sort the items produced by a mob trap, an automated farm, or any other mixed output processes.
 +

 +
The types of hopper filters and what items will or will not pass through the filters are described in the following table.

Wicker Separation
Wicker in a hopper can also be used to separate some items into their component parts, with the larger item remaining on top of the hopper, and the smaller item entering its inventory. No mechanical power is required, but if it is, the lower item will be ejected from the bottom.

Applications
+
Soul Separation
* Collecting items

* Automated chest loading

* Automated drop sorting

* Automated refilling of any block that has an inventory

* Automated storage-mine cart loading

* Filtering Ground Netherrack into Hellfire Dust

Keep in Mind
+
Soul Sand purifies and extracts the souls from many Nether-based materials, changing their properties. These souls can be bottled to make Soul Urns by physically applying normal Urns to the bottom of the hopper. When doing so, it is important to apply continuous mechanical power, as too much unextracted energy in the Soul Sand can cause the hopper to explode.
* The Redstone signal the hopper emits if no empty slot is available will reach the block beneath it. So a booster rail will be powered if the hopper is becoming full. To stop the minecart from escaping and causing the hopper to spill its content into the air place a block dispenser so it can place a solid block next to the booster rail. With this design you can trigger the minecart when the hopper has been cut from mechanical power.
+

* You may place multiple hoppers into one trench without incline. But to keep the Items/Blocks separated put another block between each hopper.
+
Title
* Hoppers can catch fire and thus be destroyed.
+

* Gravel through the Wicker will separate into Sand and Flint, with flint not passing through the hopper and being left on top.
+
|}
* Beware when filtering Ground Netherrack! Dropping more than 7 Ground Netherrack into the top of an unpowered Hopper without replacing the Soul Sand will cause the Hopper to break, losing half of the materials, the corner piece, and the pressure plate. It will also spawn you a cuddly new friend if on any difficulty other than peaceful. This has been changed as of 2.96 of Better Than Wolves.
+

* A hopper with a soul sand filter can only hold a maximum of 100 XP.

Soul Sand in a hopper can also be used to process Dragon Orbs into claimable XP. An unpowered hopper can hold a maximum of 100 XP. When powered it will drop a large XP orb as soon as enough small orbs have been collected.

A better solution for storing large amount of experience is the Vessel of the Dragon.

Advanced Uses
 +

 +
When a Hopper is powered, items will be dropped in stacks of 8, from a random slot in its inventory, at a rate of 8 items/tick.
 +

 +
Since the Hopper will only output items when there's no block under, a piston can be used to block the output, and give a more precise control over the amount of items that will be dropped from the Hopper.
 +

 +

 +

 +
Using a 1 tick pulse on a piston blocking the output of a Hopper will always drop exactly 8 items, which works great when dealing with the making of Soul Urns, since that's the exact amount of items needed.
 +

 +
A 2 tick pulse will spit out 16 items, a 3 tick pulse will spit out 24 items, etc.

Item Filtering

The hopper also contains an extra inventory slot in which you may place various items that act as a filter so you can determine what items can enter the hopper inventory. By combining multiple hoppers with different filters and a stream of water, you can sort the items produced by a mob trap, an automated farm, or any other mixed output processes.

The types of hopper filters and what items will or will not pass through the filters are described in the following table.

Filter Blocked Enters Hopper Examples that enter hopper
Wicker Not powdery Powdery Flour, Gunpowder
Slats Thick Thin Paper, String
Grate Large Items Small Items Feathers
Trapdoor Mid-sized items Small or longish Items Coal, Fishing Rod, Rope, Bones
Iron Bars Unstackable items Stackable items Dirt
Ladder Solid Blocks Items Food items

Wicker Separation

Wicker in a hopper can also be used to separate some items into their component parts, with the larger item remaining on top of the hopper, and the smaller item entering its inventory. No mechanical power is required, but if it is, the lower item will be ejected from the bottom.

Soul Separation

Soul Sand purifies and extracts the souls from many Nether-based materials, changing their properties. These souls can be bottled to make Soul Urns by physically applying normal Urns to the bottom of the hopper. When doing so, it is important to apply continuous mechanical power, as too much unextracted energy in the Soul Sand can cause the hopper to explode.

XP Storage

Soul Sand in a hopper can also be used to process Dragon Orbs into claimable XP. An unpowered hopper can hold a maximum of 100 XP. When powered it will drop a large XP orb as soon as enough small orbs have been collected.

A better solution for storing large amount of experience is the Vessel of the Dragon.

Advanced Uses

When a Hopper is powered, items will be dropped in stacks of 8, from a random slot in its inventory, at a rate of 8 items/tick.

Since the Hopper will only output items when there's no block under, a piston can be used to block the output, and give a more precise control over the amount of items that will be dropped from the Hopper.

Hopper+Piston 1tick pulse.gif

Using a 1 tick pulse on a piston blocking the output of a Hopper will always drop exactly 8 items, which works great when dealing with the making of Soul Urns, since that's the exact amount of items needed.

A 2 tick pulse will spit out 16 items, a 3 tick pulse will spit out 24 items, etc.
