Gravel
Gravel is a loose aggregate of fractured sand and rock, typically found in deposits underground, in The Nether, and making up the pathways of villages. It is used as a building material and to produce flint. Single piles of gravel are also a byproduct of mining stone. Like Sand and Loose Dirt, Gravel is affected by gravity and will fall to the nearest solid block below it. It can be easily be dug with a shovel, but care must be taken to avoid taking suffocation damage as gravel can collapse on the player if dug from below.
If falling gravel lands on a non-solid block such as a slab it will break into six piles of gravel, which can be used for a quick but inefficient method for mining, but it will break torches it lands on.

Usage
Gravel has a chance of dropping flint instead of gravel blocks, with better quality shovels have a greater chance. Flint is used to create Flint and Steel and Arrows. Gravel blocks that don't drop flint can be picked up, placed, and destroyed again.
It is also a very convenient and cheap material for constructing paths as it allows for fast movement speed compared to the medium speed of dirt.

This process does not require the hopper to be powered, though the sand will be ejected from the bottom if mechanical power is applied.
