Melon Seeds, when planted in hydrated Farmland, will grow a central stem, that grows to max size before spawning a Melon next to it. The growth of the stem can be accelerated by the application of Bone Meal to the farmland. Melon Seeds are found by crafting Melon Slices, or five can be found by dropping an intact Melon as a block from a height of 12 blocks or greater, causing it to explode into seeds.

Melon Seeds are only found naturally in the Minecarts in Abandoned Mineshafts, and are a prized resource for their versatility as a relatively simple mid-game food source.
