Melons are delicious and huge fruits that grow horizontally from mature melon plants, which grow in hydrated Farmland from Melon Seeds. Melon Seeds are initially only found in the Minecarts in Abandoned Mineshafts. After growing the initial batch of seeds obtained from the chests, the player can grow additional melon blocks using seeds crafted from melons without having to find them in chests.

Melons, like Pumpkins, are subject to gravity and will break into two Mashed Melon if they fall some distance, possible at 5 blocks, guaranteed at 15. They are coveted as an effective mid-game food source and a great reward for exploring Abandoned Mineshafts, especially to use the seeds in order to make Chicken Feed and collect Eggs.

Keep In Mind

  • Melon plants will only grow Melons on adjacent solid surfaces. Farmland is not necessary for the ground surrounding a plant, and will convert to Dirt if a Melon spawns on it.
  • Melons can grow on any side of its stem
  • If the Melon stem tries to grow on a side that is blocked, it will not grow a Melon at all, and will try again only after some time. This means that a stem that can grow on all 4 sides will grow faster than if it's limited to less than 4.
  • If all 4 sides around the stem are blocked when the plant tries to grow a Melon, it will grow on top of the stem and crush it, and will need to be replanted with a seed.
  • Melons can grow onto adjacent stems as well
