Foods are consumable items that when eaten restore hunger and fat and sometimes cause status effects. They are essential to survival, as going without them will handicap and eventually starve the player to death. Most foods cannot be eaten when full, and convert a portion of excess hunger gain if eaten when near full to fat gain. Desserts can be eaten when full, and convert to fat gain more efficiently. All foods can be stacked to 16, except for milk and chocolate milk.

Hunger and Fat
Players have a hunger bar, which shows their hunger and fat level. The hunger level is represented by 10 shanks and each shank is divided in 6 segments. The fat level is represented by a white outline around the hunger bar, and each roll is divided in 8 segments.
The hunger level is increased by eating food, and decreased over time, as well by actions such as walking, sprinting, or jumping. The hunger bar shakes whenever hunger is consumed by player action.
The fat level is decreased instead of the food level if there is fat over an empty shank of the hunger bar. A full roll of fat lasts for the same amount of activity as a full shank of hunger. The fat level is increased by excess food gain when the hunger meter is full. Most foods convert a quarter of the hunger gain to fat gain, but desserts give between half and three times their hunger gain as fat gain.
When hunger is at a high enough value, the player regenerates half a heart of health every 30 seconds. If it depletes below certain thresholds, the player loses their ability to sprint, jump, and becomes progressively worse at moving, mining and dealing damage. If the hunger bar is empty, the player's health will deplete.
The player can get food poisoning from eating certain raw foods or being attacked by a jungle spider, which causes the player's hunger to deplete faster as well as making them unable to eat food.
Detrimental effects
Failing to keep your health, food and fat levels healthy causes detrimental effects.
Caused by hunger bar
Description | Cause | Exhaustion Level | Additional Effects |
---|---|---|---|
Peckish | Hunger bar ≤ 4 | 100% | Loss of heal, loss of sprint |
Hungry | Hunger bar ≤ 3 | 75% | Inability to use the Hand Crank |
Famished | Hunger bar ≤ 2 | 50% | Loss of jump |
Starving | Hunger bar ≤ 1 | 25% | |
Dying | Hunger and fat bar empty | 25% | Nausea and damage |
Caused by health bar
Description | Cause | Exhaustion Level | Additional Effects |
---|---|---|---|
Hurt | Health bar ≤ 5 | 100% | Loss of sprint |
Injured | Health bar ≤ 4 | 75% | |
Wounded | Health bar ≤ 3 | 50% | |
Crippled | Health bar ≤ 2 | 25% | Loss of jump, inability to swim |
Dying | Health bar ≤ 1 | 25% | Blindness |
Caused by fat bar
Description | Cause | Exhaustion Level | Additional Effects |
---|---|---|---|
Plump | Fat bar ≥ 6 | 100% | Loss of sprint |
Chubby | Fat bar ≥ 7 | 75% | |
Fat | Fat bar ≥ 8 | 50% | |
Obese | Fat bar ≥ 9 | 25% | Loss of jump |
Exhaustion level affects movement speed, mining speed, attack strength and bow strength. The player will only be affected by the worst exhaustion level, in addition to any other effects applicable to the player. If the player is affected by Gloom, their exhaustion level will be multiplied by 50%.
Progression of Food
Hardcore Hunger adds and modifies several recipes for foods. Resulting from the modified recipes Better Than Wolves gives a sense of progression towards better foods.
Basic Foods
These foods are available to the player at the start of the game. They are either limited in supply or the amount of hunger they restore is too small to sustain the player.

Keep in Mind
- Detrimental effects are only applied when a status is shown.
- As a general rule, food items with more ingredients are more efficient.
- Under Hardcore Hunger, since healing speed is greatly reduced, staying fed above "peckish" is important when there is a risk of health loss.
- All furnace recipes shown here also work in either the Cauldron, or the Kiln.
