Burned meat is the result of leaving any type of raw meat on a campfire with a high flame for too long. To properly cook the meat, keep the flame on medium and stop adding fuel if it gets to high. Burned meat can still be eaten to restore a single shank of hunger. Since burning meat takes less time than cooking it, burning meat intentionally may be a good strategy if you're in desperate need of immediate food to avoid starving. Other options in such a situation are cured meat (restores 1 shank, requires nitre) or just eating it raw (restores 1.5 shanks but has a risk of food poisoning).

On standard difficulty, burned meat will drop instead of raw meat from any animal that dies while on fire. In relaxed mode, burning creatures drop cooked meat.
