Experience

1 - 3

Pigs are passive mobs that naturally spawn in the world. They can be found in most biomes with grass and only drop raw porkchops. They can be mounted if right-clicked with a saddle.

For more details about the overall changes to animals and how to farm them, see Animal Tweaks.

For more details about the effect of infection from dead souls, see Possession

Appearance

A pig has pink skin, ears, and a big nose. Their eyes consist of one black and one white pixel. They have a short, stubbed tail and their snouts protrude from their face.

Behavior

  • Pigs will wander around and eat grass, converting it directly to loose dirt when they do.
  • If a block nearby gets broken or placed or a nearby animal gets attacked, they'll quickly try to flee.
  • They will follow the player around if they're holding carrots, cooked carrots, carrot on a stick, potatoes, wheat or chocolate.
  • Possession, also known as "Nothing to Worry About", is what happens to living animals and villagers, but not the player, when exposed to the spirits of The Nether after a short time: infected souls start to come out of the Nether and leak into your world. These spirits are invisible, and will seep out a short distance from any Nether Portal, and will also infect potential hosts that enter the Nether entirely, warping their behavior to generally undesirable results.

Usage

Pigs main use is as a food source. The raw porkchops they drop can be cooked over a campfire, in a brick oven or in a cauldron to make cooked porkchops which replenish 2.5 shanks of hunger. Pigs that die while on fire will instead drop burned meat on standard difficulty, or cooked porkchops on relaxed mode. Later it's also possible to combine cooked porkchops and fried or poached eggs to make ham and eggs, which would replenish 6 shanks total since it makes 2 of them which replenish 3 shanks each. Raw or cooked porkchops can also be rendered in a stoked cauldron to produce tallow, being by far the most efficient way to do so. Tallow can be used to craft candles which are a very useful and safe source of light. Unlike torches, candles don't cause fires around them, allowing them to be used in rooms made out of flammable materials.

Breeding

Pigs require chocolate in order to breed. After being fed they'll enter a breeding state (as indicated by the red heart particles) where they'll look for another nearby pig that's also in breeding state. After having successfully bred they'll create a baby and will be unable to breed for 5 minutes. If they don't manage to find a partner while in a breeding state, they will return back to normal.

Baby Pig

Baby pigs appear after two pigs successfully manage to breed.

  • They move faster than adults.
  • They eat twice as much as adults.
  • They cannot jump onto blocks.
  • They'll follow their parents until they've matured
  • They take about 20 minutes to fully mature.

Riding

Pigs can be made mountable if they're right-clicked with a saddle. This allows the player to ride the pig, however they cannot control which direction the pig walks. In order to control the pig, the player must be holding a carrot on a stick. When they do, the pig will walk in the direction the player is looking. This allows pigs to be an alternative means of transportation as they're able to jump on blocks and don't need railways or water.

Keep in mind

  • Zombies will hunt down pigs during the night.
  • When struck by lightning, pigs turn into zombie pigmen.
    • Baby pigs that get hit by lightning also turn into zombie pigmen.
    • Ridden pigs also turn into zombie pigmen upon being struck by lightning. The player will receive 2 and a half hearts damage and be knocked off the mob.
  • If a saddled pig with a player on it goes through a 1x1x1 hole, the player will start suffocating.
  • Pigs will not leave sparse grass behind when eating. Their destructive rootling will convert the grass block into loose dirt.
