Appearance

Chickens have white feathers and wings, yellow beaks, yellow feet and red wattles. Their texture is somewhat checkered. They are about the size of a block, and, like other mobs, their baby form has a small body with a large head.

Behavior

  • They follow the player if the player is holding Chicken Feed, wheat seeds, Melon Seeds, Hemp Seeds, or Pumpkin Seeds.
  • When a chicken falls from a ledge, it quickly flaps its wings and falls slowly to the ground to prevent fall damage.
  • They are drawn to light in a dark environment.
  • They flap their wings in water to keep above the surface.
  • They will pick up nearby Chicken Feed and convert this food into eggs, if they are not already waiting to lay an egg.
  • Spiders will target and kill chickens.
  • Possession, also known as "Nothing to Worry About", is what happens to living animals and villagers, but not the player, when exposed to the spirits of The Nether after a short time: infected souls start to come out of the Nether and leak into your world. These spirits are invisible, and will seep out a short distance from any Nether Portal, and will also infect potential hosts that enter the Nether entirely, warping their behavior to generally undesirable results.

Breeding

When fed Chicken Feed via right-click or dropping the feed on the ground, an adult chicken will begin to produce an egg. Chickens will always lay eggs at sunrise--if they were fed before sunset they will lay an egg the following sunrise, otherwise they will lay an egg the sunrise after.

There is only one way of breeding chickens: Throwing chicken eggs at a block (non-mob) gives a 1/8 to spawn a baby chicken. There is also a 1/32 chance of spawning 4 chicks instead of one.

Chicks

  • Chicks move faster than adults.
  • They take about 20 minutes to fully mature.
  • As a chick, they do not lay eggs and do not drop resources/experience if killed, like any other baby mob.
  • Chicks follow their parents or other adult chickens until they grow into an adult.
  • Chicks can swim in water if they try.
  • Chicks can drown in water 1 block deep or more.

Farming

Farming chickens is very useful as a mid-early renewable food source, as they provide a renewable source of chicken eggs, raw/cooked chicken, feathers, and XP; also, chicken feed is available before most other animal foods. As with other animals, you will want to keep them in an enclosed or fenced area so they don't wander off or get eaten by hostile mobs.
