Sword

Swords are versatile weapons used for defence and close combat. They are a direct upgrade to the wood club and bone club, and deal high damage when striking enemies, with higher quality swords dealing more damage. They can destroy cobwebs quickly, but do not yield string. Attacking a boat or a minecart with a sword will destroy it faster but will not decrease the sword's durability. Zombie Pigmen can drop the Gold Sword, Zombies can drop the Iron Sword, and Wither Skeletons can drop the Stone Sword, which cannot be crafted normally. Blacksmith Villagers can also sell Iron and Diamond swords at sufficient levels.

Swords differ to other objects in that they can be used to block by holding down right click. While you cannot attack while blocking and movement will be greatly reduced, you will take half damage from non-fire based attacks. This can be life-saving when anticipating skeleton arrows or creeper blasts that you cannot dodge.

Swords can also be further improved by enchanting.
