Cobwebs are very sticky blocks made by a spitting projectile produced by all varieties of spider, to slow their prey before they move in for the kill. They are also commonly found in Abandoned Mine Shafts, especially dense near their Cave Spider spawners, and in Strongholds, especially in the libraries. They are unique in their ability to significantly slow the movement of all players, mobs, entities or items that walk through them, both horizontally or vertically, to approximately 15% of their former speed. Spiders are the only exception to this, whose movement is completely unaffected by cobwebs.

Cobwebs are also the primary source of String in the early game, and during the day they can be an invaluable resource for the creation of stone tools. To do this, they can be harvested with any Chisel type tool to produce one String after being broken in 5 stages, or with Shears to produce a whole block which can be crafted into two String. Swords and Axes are useful for destroying cobwebs quickly, but will produce no string at all.

The ability of cobwebs to slow down the fall of items make them effective to create a long delay circuit, such as by firing a sacrificial item from a Dispenser through a column of cobwebs and on to a Detector Block.

Keep In Mind

  • A spider can only spit one cobweb. If it is killed before it manages to do so, it can drop up to two Strings.
