Boats are a cheap and effective means of transport across water. They can be placed by right clicking on any open water, boarded by right clicking again, and disembarked by right clicking on them a third time. While they are not much faster than walking speed normally, holding a Sail will cause them to automatically push forwards at speeds even higher than sprinting without the need for additional food, causing rivers and oceans to be quickly traversable.

Once placed, boats are quite fragile, and can be broken by hand or by tools to return it to item form, although if it hits land at sufficient speed (such as when it is propelled by a sail), it will break into two Shafts and two Saw Dust.

Sailing

Like minecarts, a boat may be right-clicked to enter or exit. Boats can be entered from any direction, including below (which is useful for getting to the surface slightly quicker after diving).

Boats move according to the player's control or water currents. If on land, a boat may still be controlled but extremely slowly.

Boats are controlled by the player's movement keys: they will accelerate slowly in the same direction the player would move if they were not in the boat. Boats also turn to always face in the direction of movement, turning you with them. For example, pressing the forward and right keys, or pressing the forward key while you face slightly to the right, will result in moving in a circle as the boat swings to the right, continuously changing your “push” direction. When moving fast enough, there will be "water spray" effect at the bow wake.

When holding a Sail, the boat will act as if it were constantly being propelled forward. While it is possible to slow down by holding the back key, manoeuvrability is limited until the Sail is unequipped.

If you move through an area with only 1 block of air between the water and ceiling, you will take suffocation damage, but can still move anywhere the boat can.

If a boat runs into another entity such as a player, another boat, or a mob, it will bounce off and change direction; running into a block will merely stop movement (if the boat does not break). If you crash a boat into another boat, the boat being ridden will be destroyed while the other one will just bump away.

Keep In Mind

  • Boats are broken into items by taking damage, so they can be broken by Skeleton arrows.
  • While generally harmless during the day at the water's surface, Squids are extremely dangerous at night, and they will grab and drown any unsuspecting victim if they are caught sailing over any unlit waters.
  • Some types of Armor are heavy enough to prevent you from swimming, which can be deadly if you find yourself overboard for any reason in deep waters.
  • It is impossible to fully stop a boat while holding a sail. Unequip it when approaching land.
  • Slabs or Soul Sand placed at the edge of water will cause boats to run aground instead of breaking, even when approaching at high speed.
