Squid are 8-armed mobs that spawn in Water. While in daylight, Squid are passive towards the player, and will avoid it by swimming down in deep water, leaving the surface safe to swim or boat on. However, during the night (or thunderstorms) they will come to the surface, attacking any player or animal that comes near. Due to darkness, squid will also attack players that swim in very deep water even during the day. They can be found in water from levels greater than 45, and they can spawn in any biome.

For more details about the effect of infection from dead souls, see Possession

Appearance

Squid have 8 tentacles, blueish-teal skin and teeth that can be found underneath the head. They have two eyes which appear wall-eyed. When moving about, the squid's tentacles open and close, giving them an appearance of pushing themselves forward. Despite being called squid in-game, their body arrangement is closer to that of a real-world octopus. Squid (unlike land-based mobs) can swim against a current and not get pushed by it.

Behavior

  • Squid will attack players and animals (including wolves) when in darkness, and will also attach to zombies but be unable to damage them. When attacking, squid can grab their victims at a short distance and fling them into water. In touching distance, they will attempt to attach on top of the victim's head, slowly causing damage and disabling the ability to swim. The combination of these attacks typically cause most of a squid's effective threat to be caused by drowning instead of direct damage. Players can damage a squid on their own head by attacking in any direction.
  • Squid can breathe in water, but cannot breathe in air, and will suffocate if stranded out of the water.
  • The light-avoiding nature of squid means that the surface and coastal edges of water is safe during the daytime, but dangerous during the night or thunderstorms, even when travelling on a Boat.
  • In Relaxed Mode, Squid will not attack players standing outside of water or sat in boats, but will attack players swimming in water.
  • Squid can be infected by a Nether portal or a possessed Wolf. Once infected, it will start to jump in the air, where it will attempt to turn into a Ghast. (See : Hardcore Nothing to Worry About)
  • Possession, also known as "Nothing to Worry About", is what happens to living animals and villagers, but not the player, when exposed to the spirits of The Nether after a short time: infected souls start to come out of the Nether and leak into your world. These spirits are invisible, and will seep out a short distance from any Nether Portal, and will also infect potential hosts that enter the Nether entirely, warping their behavior to generally undesirable results.

Drops

When killed, a squid can drop 1 - 3 Ink Sacs, rarely Mysterious Glands and very rarely Respiration Arcane scrolls.

With Squid and Ghasts drops being very valuable to craft potions (Health and Regeneration), and required to trade with Villagers, it is highly suggested to build a Squid farm.

Spawning

Squid require a 3D + shape of water blocks (source or flowing) to spawn:

Squid can be farmed relatively early, by building a big 3D cube of water where they will spawn, and using water to channel them in a killing zone. Since they suffocate out of the water, simply dropping them on top of a Hopper is all that is required.

Trivia

  • Squid are the only underwater mob.
  • Squid cannot drag you through an opening you cannot walk through. This is worth considering when designing methods to Fish safely.
  • Hitting a squid underwater causes them to rise approximately 1/3 to 1/2 a block.
  • Squid cannot be damaged by attacking their tentacles.
  • Squid, like Bats, and Ocelots cannot breed, but they will regularly spawn and despawn.
  • It is possible for a squid to receive fall damage.
