The Shaft is a basic piece of wood similar to its vanilla counterpart: stick. One shaft can be obtained from punching a wood block, wearing it down to the fifth stage, or two shafts can be obtained in the same way by using a Chisel type tool such as the sharp stone, producing a shaft at the second and fifth stages. Punching or chipping wood also produces bark and saw dust.
Shafts are used primarily as the handles for tools, torches, bows and swords, amongst other crafting recipes, or crafted alone into a pointy stick. They can also be used to construct campfires, fire ploughs, wood clubs, or burned as fuel, providing twice the burn time of saw dust or bark.
Shafts can be placed into soft surfaces in the overworld such as dirt and sand blocks. Mob heads can be placed on them in this manner as well.
The stick was renamed as "shaft" in Better Than Wolves version 4.83 to more accurately indicate its purpose in the game.
Crafting
Splitting logs in a crafting grid requires placing an Axe into the grid with the block of wood. When used this way, the axe is damaged one durability point per log.
