Obsidian is a volcanic glass naturally infused with infernal magic that renders it extremely resistant to damage, and holds properties useful for punching portals into The Nether. It is essentially impervious to explosions, and is difficult to mine, requiring a diamond pickaxe or better. It is the result of water pouring on to lava source blocks, and is most commonly found naturally at the lava layer deep underground. It is also found in the form of vast pillars to the sky in The End, as well as the spawning platform, which will regenerate obsidian blocks on re-entry. Obsidian cannot be moved by pistons.
Uses
Nether Portals
Portals can be constructed from a 4x5 vertical rectangle of obsidian, and then activated by allowing the interior to catch fire. Firestarters cannot light obsidian directly, but constructing a campfire in or adjacent to the portal and lighting it will spread the fire to the portal.
