Shears are versatile tools with many applications in the manipulation or organic material, including shearing Sheep, disarming Creepers for their Creeper Oysters, and cutting Leather into useful parts to increase their efficiency. They can also harvest Leaves, Grass, Vines and Cobwebs without breaking them.

See Tools and Weapons for a full list with more details and info about durability and damage.

Snipping Creepers costs 10 durability, which means you can snip 24 creepers with Iron Shears and 50 with Diamond Shears.

Shears are considered an important part of any explorer's arsenal for their ability to instantly disable Creepers from exploding by right-clicking on them with Shears equipped. Doing so will also harvest Creeper Oysters.

Shears are the most efficient way to harmlessly obtain Wool from sheep (each sheep provides 1-3 balls of Wool when sheared), which will replenish periodically after they eat from a Grass Block. Sheep can also be colored with Dyes before shearing to obtain the desired color wool, but they will revert to their natural state afterwards. Selectively breeding sheep is an effective way to obtain more exotic colors without the need for dye.

By using shears on tree leaves you can obtain placeable leaf blocks that do not decay. Normally, destroying a leaf block occasionally drops Saplings at a frequency of about 5%. Shears can also be used to harvest Grass, Ferns, Dead Bushes and Vines. While grass cannot be used as food, it can be used to trick animals that eat it into following you. Vines can be replanted for their ladder-like properties and to farm them by leaving the uppermost vine intact.

Shears destroy placed Cobweb blocks in half a second, yielding a whole cobweb which can be used for their strong slowing properties. They can also harvest Red Mushrooms from a Mooshroom, which turns it back into a normal Cow.

Shears can be used to harvest the top block of a fully-grown Hemp plant by hand without also killing the bottom and necessitating replanting.
