Diamond Ore is a mineral block that may be found deep underground at levels 15 or below, including exposed surfaces, and drops the legendary Diamond that can be used for crafting high quality tools and devices. It can be chipped by an iron chisel or mined by a pickaxe of iron or better to retrieve one diamond, even when embedded in third strata stone that otherwise cannot be mined by iron tools. Veins vary in size and, unless intersecting with open air or another structure, typically come in clusters of 4 to 8 ores.

Diamond Ore blocks can only be obtained whole with a Silk Touch pickaxe. However, since diamond ore only spawns in the deepest strata, upper- and middle-strata diamond ore blocks are not obtainable.

Keep in Mind

  • Unlike with coal or iron, iron chisels and iron pickaxes are equally efficient at mining gems.
  • A diamond pickaxe or better is necessary for breaking third strata stone, which could block access to the entire vein. Once one is obtained, it may be a good idea to return to spots where diamond was found to mine out the vein and find any extra gems.
  • Watch out for hidden lava!
  • Typically level 11 is a good depth for strip-mining for diamond, as it is the deepest level that places most lava pockets at foot level.
