Coal ore is a mineral block that may be found underground at any depth, including exposed surfaces, and is a source of coal. It can be chipped by chisels to produce a pile of coal dust, or more efficiently mined by any quality pickaxe to produce a piece of coal along with six loose stones. Veins greatly vary in size and, unless intersecting with open air or another structure, typically come in clusters of 5 to 8 ores, though veins deep underground can range up to 50 blocks or more.

Coal ore blocks can only be obtained whole with a silk touch pickaxe.

Keep in Mind

• Both coal and piles of coal dust have crafting applications, though coal can be ground in a millstone for two dust, so it is always more efficient to mine with a pickaxe.
