Detector rails are a variant of standard rails that can detect minecarts passing above them, emitting a redstone signal. They are similar to pressure plates, but detect only minecarts and not other entities. Detector rails are crafted similarly to rails but with the addition of a pressure plate and redstone. Just as different kinds of pressure plates detect different entities, the types of minecart that a detector rail detects depends on what kind pressure plate is used to craft it.

Applications
The three different kinds of detector rails behave as follows:
- Wood detects any minecart passing over it, empty or otherwise
- Stone detects any non-empty minecart, whether occupied by a mob, animal or player, or even a chest
- Soulforged steel detects only a minecart which has a player inside.
These changes can be extremely useful in routing carts to various locations in an automated rail network.
- Automatic cart sorting station
- Minecart clock with different intervals/sequences on one track

Better Than Wolves Lab - Detector rails & Obsidian pressure plate
Note: Before version 4.85, the obsidian pressure plate was used instead of the soulforged steel pressure plate for the exact same purpose.
