The Soul Urn is a collection of souls confined to torment inside a simple piece of pottery. Their suffering may thus be conveniently harnessed to create various devices and tools to make life easier, and is one of the components of Soulforged Steel.

Filtering
Soul-infused materials (Ground Netherrack, Soul Dust or Glowstone Dust) will instantly turn into their processed equivalents when it is thrown on top of a Hopper that has been fitted with a Soul Sand block as a filter, but it will not fall through the hopper. It is very advisable to apply mechanical power to the hopper to release the extracted soul energy, as converting eight or more cumulative materials while it is unpowered will cause the hopper to explode, destroying half of the materials, the corner piece and the pressure plate.
During this process with a powered hopper, the extracted souls can be captured by attaching an Urn below the Hopper to create Soul Urns. Every eight Soul Dust will fill one urn and cause it to drop off, leaving a place for a new urn. This process can be automated with the use of Block Dispensers and other devices. The process of Soul Urn creation is amenable to automation almost in its entirety.
