The Shaft is similar to its vanilla counterpart: stick. The stick was renamed as "shaft" in Better Than Wolves version 4.83 to more accurately indicate its purpose in the game. It has a High Efficiency Recipe that allows it to also be crafted from Wooden Moulding.

Punching a log with bare hands will produce different drops in stages, reducing the Wood block at each stage. The first stage always produces one Oak Bark Birch Bark Jungle Bark Spruce Bark . The second to fifth stage produces Shaft and Sawdust randomly with a seemingly greater chance for sawdust.

Sticks are used primarily as the handles for tools, torches, and weapons. They can also be used as the shaft of arrows, the post for signs or the ties of rails. Sticks can also be used as a fuel source for furnaces. Though they are renewable, sticks are a less efficient fuel than wood planks, and require 2 sticks to be burned per furnace operation. Sticks are recommended for short jobs, like cooking pork, or if just a little more fuel is required to complete the current operation, and it would not complete otherwise. Note that it takes 3 sticks to do the same job as 1 wood plank. It is not recommended to use sticks if they have just been crafted, since the two planks used to craft the sticks can burn for 30 seconds (three smelting operations), while the four sticks produced by crafting those two planks will burn for just 20 seconds (two smelting operations).

Shafts can be placed into soft surfaces in the overworld such as dirt and sand blocks. Mob heads can be placed on them in this manner as well.
