Planters are pottery items used for growing crops and other plants. They can be filled with dirt or soul sand to grow overworld or Nether plants, respectively. For the most part they are an upgrade to farmland, since they don't need to be weeded and crops growing in them cannot be trampled. Certain plants can only be grown in planters, namely cacti.

Use

By itself, the planter is useless, except for decoration. Once it is filled with dirt, grass, or soul sand, the planter can have crops planted on it.

Dirt Planter

When filled with loose dirt, the planter can grow crops that would normally be planted in either dirt or farmland, including wheat, hemp, potatoes, carrots, sugar cane, and saplings. A dirt planter can be fertilized with bone meal just like farmland to increase growth speed. It has the following differences:

• Weeds will never grow in a dirt planter.
• Dirt planters do not need to be tilled and jumping on them will not uproot crops.
• Crops that need hydrated farmland still need to be hydrated in dirt planters, which have different hydration mechanics than farmland. While farmland can be hydrated by water up to 4 blocks away horizontally, dirt planters need to be adjacent to a water block. This includes the vertical direction: the most efficient way to hydrate planters is to run water streams beneath them, or else place them above existing ponds or lakes.
• Saplings planted in a planter will only grow if the planter is fertilized, growing faster than they would in dirt. Using a planter to grow a sapling will destroy the planter!
• Cacti can be planted only in dirt planters.

Soul Sand Planter

Soul sand planters are used to grow nether wart and blood wood saplings, which behave exactly the same as when planted on soul sand. The only benefit to using soul sand planters over soul sand is that the planter version won't slow you down when walking on it, and is a full block tall (soul sand has a 7/8-block-high collision volume).

Crafting

To get the planter, you must first form the unfired pottery version of it by putting a clay block on a spinning turntable. The clay block must go through four full rotations before it turns into the unfired planter. You must then fire the unfired planter in a kiln.

Once you have the planter, you still need fill it with either dirt to be able to plant any regular world plants in it, including the cactus, or with soul sand to be able to plant nether wart and blood wood saplings in it.

Keep in Mind

• The dirt in the filled planter can only be hydrated by water directly touching it to the side or below.
• You can't plant anything in the planter until you fill it with dirt or soul sand using the recipes above.
• You can plant every Minecraft plant in the planter.
• Crops growing in a planter cannot be trampled and will not grow weeds like crops on normal farmland.
• Nether wart and blood wood saplings still need to be in the Nether to mature even if they are planted in a planter filled with soul sand.
