Cha-ching! Emeralds are a form of "currency," normally obtained by, and used for, trading with villagers. They can also be found in desert and jungle temples, and by mining Emerald Ore, found sporadically in the depths of Extreme Hills biomes.

Note that Emeralds cannot be obtained by firing the ore block in a kiln; it must instead be placed and mined again without Silk Touch (ideally with the Fortune enchantment).
