Isn't it rather annoying that redstone circuitry lacks the ability to "see" the world around it and react to changes in it? Well, the detector block is capable of seeing just about anything that is placed *directly* (up to one block away) in front of it, whether it be a block, a fluid, a player, a mob, a dropped item, what have you. Upon seeing something it turns on and produces redstone power. This has a wide range of uses from simple archery targets to complex redstone applications.

Note that orienting the Detector Block to face upwards will also allow it to see rain and snow, effectively turning it into a weather sensor (particularly useful in avoiding Gear Box breakage due to an overpowered Wind Mill). Also, the Detector Block has the ability to "see" fully grown wheat in the block directly below it, opening up the possibility of fully automated wheat farms.

Applications

  • Automation
    • Any farming of a at least two block high plant/tree
    • Railway stations
    • Light activation
    • Mobgrinders
    • Elevators
  • Intrusion detection
  • Traps

Keep in mind

  • The Block's orientation must face the position where you want to detect something.
  • The Block will only see things directly in front (1 Block deep) of it.
  • The only exception to this rule is for wheat. The Detector will "see" fully grown wheat placed one block in front, one block below.
  • To detect weather, the Block must face upwards and must be able to see the sky.
  • There are some issues with weather detection:
    • The Detector block must be in the same chunk as the Wind Mill in order to properly protect the attached gearbox.
    • Walking far-away, loading a save game, etc. might cause the detection to fail due to Minecraft's performance management.
