The Crafting Table (also known as a Work Stump) is an all-purpose station for greatly improving your crafting capabilities. While items with recipes in a 2x2 grid can be crafted from the inventory, a crafting table provides access to recipes in a 3x3 grid, such as the stone pickaxe or iron tools. Crafting tables cannot themselves be crafted, but are obtained by chipping a wood stump with an iron chisel. They retain the properties of the stump and cannot be picked up whole by any means. Crafting tables can be removed by using a stump remover while crouching, or destroyed by fire. They can also be stripped by hand into a partially worn stump (no tools can speed up this process).

An example recipe for a Stone Pickaxe

Right-clicking on a crafting table will open the 3×3 crafting grid. A crafting table is essential in order to advance past the early game. The first item players typically make on a crafting table is a stone pickaxe.

Holding shift when clicking on an item to be retrieved from the crafting table will craft as many items as can be made from the given ingredients, and move them to your inventory.

Items left in the crafting table spaces will fall out when the crafting menu is closed, and drop in front of you. The same will happen if you don't have enough inventory slots for the new items (perhaps you made too many of a non-stackable item).

Keep in Mind

  • Iron Chisels take significant durability damage from creating crafting tables, so be mindful of where you craft them.
  • The Anvil is a craftable version of the crafting table that can be more easily placed.
  • 2x2 recipes can also be used on a crafting table.
