The vanilla cauldron has been renamed to the "Cistern" to avoid overlap with the naming of the mod Cauldron.
The cauldron is a large iron vat that functions like a chest unless it is directly above a fire block. If it is, it slowly processes any valid recipes in its inventory, one at a time. This allows players to place items whenever she/he passes by the Cauldron, and come back later to collect them in their completed form. Note that while a fire directly below the Cauldron is required for any cooking or boiling to take place, additional fires below the pot (as in the blocks neighboring the fire underneath the Cauldron, diagonals included) will provide additional heat and decrease the cooking time substantially. The recipe includes a bucket of water and a bone to create a soup stock which any food can then be cooked in. The Cauldron has many other additional uses at later tech levels, such at tanning, alchemy and textile processing.
It should be noted that more advanced reactions like rendering into glue require the flames underneath the Cauldron to be stoked, which is only possible with Hibachis. Reactions requiring a regular flame, such as cooking or boiling, will not proceed when it is heated by a stoked flame. It should also be noted that having Hellfire Dust or any other explosive in a Cauldron over a stoked flame is not the best idea...
The Cauldron can be tipped by application of mechanical power. When tipped, all items in the Cauldron (except possibly those on the bottom row) will spill onto the block clockwise along - when facing the pot - the axle providing power to the Cauldron.
