Iron Ore is a mineral block that may be found underground at any depth, including exposed surfaces. It can be chipped by Chisels to produce Piles of Iron Ore, or more efficiently mined by any quality Pickaxe to produce full Chunks of ore, along with six Loose Stones. Two Piles can be crafted to produce a Chunk, and each chunk can be smelted in a Brick Oven to produce an Iron Nugget, which can in turn be used to create some iron tools and Iron Ingots. Ore veins vary in size and, unless intersecting with open air or another structure, typically come in clusters of 4 to 8 blocks.
Alternatively, Chunks can be placed as physical items in a Kiln and smelted into an Iron Nugget to eliminate the need for fuel, or nine combined by crafting or Piston packing to form a Block of Iron Ore, which can be smelted in a Kiln to form an Iron Ingot directly.
Iron Ore blocks can only be obtained with a Silk Touch pickaxe, but they can be smelted in a Kiln similar to a Chunk of Iron Ore.

- While you cannot turn a Block of Iron Ore into Chunks in a crafting grid, you can get the 9 chunks back by placing in the world and breaking it with a Chisel-type tool, including the Sharp Stone or Pointy Stick.
