Pickaxes are one of the most commonly used tools, used for breaking stone and efficiently harvesting ores. Different pickaxes are required to harvest certain ores, or to quickly break through certain stratas of stone. They can also be further improved using enchanting. Pickaxes other than Soulforged Steel can be left embedded in stone or most other stone-like blocks for storage.

Stone Pickaxe	String or Hemp Fiber, Stone, Shaft		Harvests first strata stone, coal, iron and lapis lazuli in two stages. Smooth stone produces five stones and three piles of gravel. Breaks crafted stone items such as bricks in one stage.
Gold Pickaxe	Gold Ingot, Shaft		(Gold has poor durability.)
Iron Pickaxe	Iron Ingot, Shaft		Breaks blocks in one stage. Smooth stone produces one loose cobblestone, one stone, and one pile of gravel. Can also harvest second strata stone, netherrack, redstone, emerald and diamond.
Diamond Pickaxe	Diamond Ingot, Shaft		Can also harvest third strata stone and obsidian, and sandstone as a whole block.
Refined Pickaxe	Soulforged Steel, Haft		Can be used to block by holding right click.
Mattock	Soulforged Steel, Haft		Also functions as a refined shovel.
