While netherrack burns indefinitely, it can't be used as fuel for the furnace. This feature attempts to correct that by including a new form of fuel that can be made by combining coal dust and hellfire dust derived from netherack (the logic behind this is that the hellfire dust doesn't burn hot enough to be used in smelting on its own). The hellfire dust serves to increase the burn-time of the coal allowing the player to effectively quadruple the amount of furnace fuel in his possession by combining the two.
