Dirt is an earthy material found abundantly in the overworld, and is the second most common solid block, next to Stone. With the exception of deserts, a layer of Dirt can be found underneath Grass at the top surface of all biomes, at the bottom of oceans and rivers, and in pockets underground at all altitudes. It can be dug by hand, producing 6 Piles of Dirt, or more efficiently by Iron Shovel or better, producing Loose Dirt.
The only way to pick up Dirt in its natural non-loose form is via the silk-touch enchantment or by using a Piston Shovel.

Uses
Using a hoe on a placed block of dirt will turn it into farmland, which can be then fertilised with bone meal and have seeds planted in it. Farmland will revert to loose dirt if jumped on by the player, animals or mobs, or if it is more than 4 blocks away from water.
When a dirt block is adjacent to a grass block and is exposed to a light level of at least 4 (e.g. from torches or sunlight), it will eventually be converted into a grass block; when this happens is random. Dirt can also have mycelium spread on to the block in much the same way, but requiring a light level of at least
Keep in Mind
- The only way to convert loose dirt into natural dirt is to allow grass to spread on it, and then smother the grass by placing a block on top.
- Using a hoe on dirt will not produce hemp seeds. You must use it on a grass block instead, which will also convert it into loose dirt, and can be tilled again to convert it into farmland.
