Smooth Stone is a block of solid rock that is found in abundance. Smooth stone can be mined by pickaxes or chipped by chisels to produce stones and piles of gravel, and an iron pickaxe or better will also produce cobblestone. If a smooth stone block is not touching any other smooth stone blocks, an Iron Chisel will instead harvest the stone as a whole block. Smooth Stone cannot be crafted by any means, and can only be obtained in the inventory by isolating and chiselling, or by the use of a pickaxe enchanted with Silk Touch.

Stone can be found under layers of grass and dirt in most biomes, mycelium in mushroom islands or under layers of sandstone in deserts. It can also be seen exposed at the side of mountains in extreme hill biomes. Stone found at lower levels will have the effects of Hardcore Stratification, requiring better tools to destroy the blocks. However, harvesting the resources can still be done using lesser tools.

Stone can also be made by lava flowing on top of water sources, where the water will be replaced. Silverfish will dig into stone, in addition to stone brick and cobblestone. When it does this, it creates a Monster Egg.

Stone can be used as a building material, and can be used in several crafting recipes, including the Mill Stone, several Redstone devices, and Minimized Blocks on the Soulforge.
