Hardcore Hunger drastically changes the way the food system works in Minecraft. For example, the invisible saturation value used in vanilla has been replaced with a visible fat bar. Fat is built up when the player eats more food than necessary to fill the hunger bar or when eating desserts after full. Fat is burned off when the hunger level goes below the fat level.

Additional changes

  • Additional food poisoning effects for raw foods aside from chicken
  • Hunger steadily decreases as time passes as well as when you perform actions
  • Food stacks are limited to 16

Side Effects

Failing to keep track of your health, food and fat levels can produce negative side effects.

Caused by hunger bar

Description Cause Effect
Peckish Hunger bar ≤ 4 Loss of sprint
Hungry Hunger bar ≤ 3 Decrease in movement speed (1.33x less), inability to hand crank, decrease in attack strength
Famished Hunger bar ≤ 2 Decrease in movement speed (2x less), loss of jump, decrease in bow power
Starving Hunger bar ≤ 1 Decrease in movement speed (4x less)
Dying Hunger and fat bar empty Nausea and damage

Caused by health bar

Description Cause Effect
Hurt Health bar ≤ 5 Loss of sprint
Injured Health bar ≤ 4 Decrease in movement speed (1.33x less)
Wounded Health bar ≤ 3 Decrease in movement speed (2x less,)decrease in attack strength, inability to hand crank
Crippled Health bar ≤ 2 Decrease in movement speed (4x less), loss of jump, decrease in bow power
Dying Health bar ≤ 1 Blindness

Caused by fat bar

Description Cause Effect
Plump Fat bar ≥ 6 Loss of sprint
Chubby Fat bar ≥ 7 Decrease in movement speed (1.33x less)
Fat Fat bar ≥ 8 Decrease in movement speed (2x less), decrease in attack strength, inability to hand crank
Obese Fat bar ≥ 9 Decrease in movement speed (4x less), loss of jump, decrease in bow power

Progression of Food

Hardcore Hunger also adds and modifies several recipes for foods. Resulting from the modified recipes BTW gives a since of Progression towards better foods.

Keep in Mind

  • No negative effects are applied when the respective bar is above half full.
  • As a general rule, food items with more ingredients are more efficient.
  • Under Hardcore Hunger, since healing speed is greatly reduced, staying fed above "peckish" is important when there is a risk of health loss.
  • Losing the ability to jump also means losing the ability to swim
