The Detector Block "sees" any block, item, character, mob or plant in front of it and emits a redstone signal.

Applications

  • Automation
    • Any farming of a at least two block high plant/tree
    • Railway stations
    • Light activation
    • Mobgrinders
    • Elevators (due to a minor bug in 2.60 this will not work with moving platforms)
  • Intrusion detection
  • Traps

Keep in Mind

  • The Block's orientation must face the position where you want to detect something.
  • The Block will only see things directly in front (1 Block deep) of it.
  • To detect weather, the Block must face upwards and must be able to see the sky.
  • There are some issues with weather detection:
    • The Detector block must be in the same chunk as the Wind Mill in order to properly protect the attached gearbox.
    • Walking far-away, loading a save game, etc. might cause the detection to fail due to Minecraft's performance management.
