The Mining Charge is a more effective explosive than dynamite though weaker than TnT. However, the explosion will not destroy any block drops like TnT does at close range, though it may destroy drops that are already on the ground, with the exception of ore items. The mining charge will never destroy ores in either block or item form. (though you may lose your drops anyway if your mining charge shaft happens to go through some lava...)

The Mining Charge is in the shape of a panel, and is placed like one as well. The orientation of the Charge defines the direction of the explosion.

When the mining charge explodes, it will leave you with a 3x3x3 hole (plus another 1x1x1 hole at the center of the bottom/end of the hole) with the block that the charge was attached to at the center of that hole. It doesn't matter what type of block is being exploded; the hole will always be 3x3x3 whether exploding sand or stone (or sandstone :P). (with the obvious exception of obsidian and bedrock, which are not affected)

Applications

  • Lazy/entertaining mining
  • Easy-to-make 3x3 vertical mineshafts (using downwards-facing Block Dispenser on a timer)

Keep in Mind

  • The mining charge is not as easy to set off with redstone as regular TNT; simply placing a redstone torch next to it will not set it off. You must have live redstone wire going to it, or a redstone torch directly beneath it (not above).
  • Right-clicking the Charge with flint and steel will immediately activate the Charge, unlike TNT.
  • The Mining Charge is a directional explosive, and the direction is dependent on the orientation of the Charge, which is shaped and placed like panels.
  • The Mining Charge will make a 3x3x3 hole no matter what type of block is being exploded (except for obsidian, which is unaffected as usual)
  • The Mining Charge will not fall once activated like regular TNT if placed on a wall or ceiling. However, it will fall in a straight line if dispensed from a BD.
