Summary

The Crucible is a device used primarily for metalworking. It requires a stoked fire (using a Bellows and Hibachi) directly underneath to function and can be sped up by placing up to 8 more Hibachi around the first one, making a 3x3 stoked fire patch. The Crucible can be used to make Soulforged Steel and re-smelt various items, most notably the Iron Tools, with a 2/3 return rate, and Diamond Tools, which returns 100% of the diamond ingots.

The Crucible can be "tipped" by applying mechanical power to it. This will tip all of the items into the block adjacent to the crucible. This will always be first side in a clockwise direction to the mechanical power input. This allows it to be emptied if required.

Because of the extreme heat, a lot of items can be destroyed if left in a stoked crucible, like food or Bows.

  1. Rotate 2 full rotations using mechanical power from a Wind Mill, Axles and Gear Boxes.
  2. Place the unfired mold in the Kiln.
  3. When finish it will pop out as an Item.

Usage

The Crucible functions similarly to the Cauldron, with the exception that it requires stocked fire, produced by blowing air from Bellows next to the fire produced by Hibachis.

A Redstone Clutch will be required, since it acts like a Gear Box when it comes to transferring mechanical power, but can be powered on and off using a redstone signal.

The easiest way to setup you first Crucible is this :

  • A Turntable on the 3rd setting (left click the turntable with an empty hand to change the setting)
  • A solid block on top
  • 2 Redstone Torches on opposite sides
  • Powering on and off the Redstone Clutch that gives Mechanical power to the Bellows.

Example

Here's the easiest, cheapest way to set up a Crucible :

Only 1 Hibachi is required to make stocked fire and use the recycling properties of the Crucible.

The more Hibachis you add, the faster it cooks.

Here's a maximum speed Crucible, using 9 Hibachis :

Note that only the Fire block above the Hibachi cannot be blocked. The block just above, where the double flame is when the fire is stocked, can be blocked off by any block, making it easy to have your crucible in your floor.

Cooking Time

The formula for calculating cook times (in ticks, 1 second = 20 ticks) is:

T = 4350 / (5 + 3 * (#fires - 1))
Number of
fire
Cooking time
in ticks
Cooking time
in seconds
1 870 ticks 43.5 seconds
2 544 ticks 27.2 seconds
3 396 ticks 19.8 seconds
4 311 ticks 15.55 seconds
5 256 ticks 12.8 seconds
6 218 ticks 10.9 seconds
7 190 ticks 9.5 seconds
8 168 ticks 8.4 seconds
9 150 ticks 7.5 seconds

To put it simply, 6 fires cook twice as fast as a single fire, and 9 fires cook twice as fast at 6 fires (4x as fast as 1 fire)

Keep in Mind

  • The Crucible needs a stoked Hibachi under it.
  • 9 Hibachis in a 3x3 square centered around the Crucible will provide the fastest speed.
  • Just like the Cauldron, the Crucible can be tipped to the side when provided with Mechanical power, which allows you to pour its content away from storage, and can be used for filtering in a mobtrap, especially useful for a Gold farm built in the Nether.
