Beacon

From Better Than Wolves
(Redirected from Hardcore Beacons)

The Beacon is an advanced and powerful arcane focus used to provide both a unique landmark, and give a persistent magical area of effect to the surrounding region and its inhabitants. It is activated by placing it as the final block on top of a pyramid formation of blocks, with different types of blocks having a different effect. The smallest pyramid that can be made to work with the beacon block has 1 level and consists of 9 mineral blocks, and the largest has four levels of 164 blocks.

The beacon will then emit a light blue beam of light into the sky. The range of these effects varies with the pyramid size. All players within range will have the chosen effect applied every few seconds, but when players move out of range, the effect will expire within 4–8 seconds.

Usage

Beacons require the same material throughout the pyramid. The pyramid material determines the beacon effect, and additional tiers increase the range and strength of the effects. Some beacon types may also cause side effects to occur while a beacon is active.

Tier Total Building Blocks Radius Iron Beacon Radius SFS Beacon Radius
1 (3x3)(9 blocks) 9 20 blocks 20 blocks 40 blocks
2 (5x5)(25 blocks) 34 40 blocks 80 blocks 160 blocks
3 (7x7)(49 blocks) 83 80 blocks 320 blocks Unlimited in the same dimension
4 (9x9)(81 blocks) 164 160 blocks Unlimited in the same dimension Unlimited across dimentions
Material Effect Side Effects Explanation
Block of Concentrated Hellfire Fire Resistance Pyramid blocks are always on fire Players in range are immune to damage from fire and lava
Block of Diamond Fortune Players in range get extra items from non-metal ores.
Block of Dung Poison & Nausea Players in range are poisoned and have distorted vision, unless wearing a full set of Soulforged Steel armor.
Block of Emerald Looting All killed mobs in range drop increased quantities of loot, no matter the manner of their death.
Glass No Effect Cosmetic effect only.
Glowstone Night Vision Players in range can see in the dark.
Block of Gold Haste Players in range break blocks faster.
Block of Iron Magnetic Pole Compasses in range will point to beacon.
Block of Lapis Lazuli True Sight Players in range will see a particle effect in spots dark enough to spawn mobs, similar to the Ender Spectacles without the green tint.
Can be used to identify Spawn Chunks (which are always loaded regardless of the player's presence) by showing particles flowing in the air:
  • Red particles indicate the chunk at the center, where the compass always points to
  • The majority of the spawn chunks will have purple particles
  • Blue particles will mark the chunks that are on the edge of the spawn chunk 17x17 area, next to chunks that aren't part of the spawn chunks
Ender Block Dimensional Tearing Increases Enderman spawn. Increases Silverfish activity in The End. Allows the use of Ender Chests as a Network Storage, depending upon the pyramid level which an Ender Chest is placed on:
  • Placed on the 3x3 Tier: A publicly shared inventory. This channel has separate shared inventories unique to main world, nether and the End.
  • Placed on the 5x5 Tier: A second publicly shared inventory, separate from tier 1. This channel has separate shared inventories unique to main world, nether and the End.
  • Placed on the 7x7 Tier: A third publicly shared inventory, separate from tier 1 and 2. This channel shares it's inventory across all worlds.
  • Placed on the 9x9 Tier: The private storage inventory, unique to each player.
Soulforged Steel Binding Point Blight will slowly infect Grass Blocks within range. The range is infinite vertically, and horizontally is 8, 16, 32, and 64 blocks (2^(level + 2) radius), depending on the beacon's level.
Blight spread from a steel beacon chooses a random x/z in range and any y level. If it finds a grass block there, it turns it into blight.
Players can right-click on the beacon to set it as a spawnpoint. The range is infinite vertically, and horizontally will vary depending on the tier level. At tier 4 the range of the effect is unlimited.

Example

Here's a max lvl Steel Beacon, which is the only way to set your spawn point, like a vanilla bed would. But in BTW it's pretty much the last thing you can build, and requires hundreds of hours to make.

It also comes with a drawback, in the form of Blight.

For a full pyramid you would need 164 blocks containing 2624 Soulforged Steel Ingots. A full breakdown of the required materials is as follows:

Keep in Mind

  • Beacon blocks can see through Glass, which allows for underground beacons without obstructing the beam.
  • In the Nether, Beacon Blocks need to be able to see bedrock in order to function.
  • Iron beacons have a stronger effect than others, but all beacons generate a field which the compass will point towards. The only exception is the glass beacon, since it is strictly decorative.
