Glowstone
Glowstone is a rare and coveted crystalline block that emits light indefinitely at a light level of 15, including underwater. It can only be found in hanging deposits on the underside of Netherrack, which can make them extremely difficult to harvest in more open areas that can quickly become filled with Ghasts. It is recommended to try to mine desposits in more enclosed spaces with lower ceilings.
Glowstone drops 2-4 pieces of Glowstone Dust, which may be used to re-craft the glowstone blocks. Like all non-sunlight light sources, Glowstone blocks will cause nearby Snow and Ice to melt.
It is more efficient to harvest Glowstone blocks using Silk Touch Enchantment or Fortune Enchantment, since one block is equivalent to four Glowstone Dust, while usual harvesting is more likely to drop less than mentioned. Note however, that when hitting Glowstone with a Pickaxe enchanted with Fortune, Glowstone still only drops up to 4 Glowstone Dust.

Redstone
When placing Redstone on a Glowstone block, being a transparent block signals can pass from one block to diagonally another with Glowstone "blocking but not blocking" it. Redstone wire, even though it may appear to connect up the side of a Glowstone block and to the wire portion on top, will not send a Redstone signal down the Glowstone block. This allows for one-way signals without a Repeater. This makes Glowstone effective for vertical diodes, logic gate designs and space-efficient instant vertical Redstone.
Filtering
Glowstone Dust will instantly turn into Brimstone when it is thrown on top of a Hopper that has been fitted with a Soul Sand block as a filter, but it will not fall through the hopper. It is very advisable to apply mechanical power to the hopper to release the extracted soul energy, as converting eight or more cumulative Glowstone Dust while it is unpowered will cause the hopper to explode, destroying half of the materials, the corner piece and the pressure plate.
During this process with a powered hopper, the extracted souls can optionally be captured by attaching an Urn below the Hopper to create Soul Urns, which are critical components of advanced devices and are one of the four components of Soulforged Steel. Every eight Glowstone Dust will fill one urn and cause it to drop off, leaving a place for a new urn. This process can be automated with the use of Block Dispensers and other devices.
