Cauldron

From Better Than Wolves

The Cauldron is a large multipurpose iron vat that uses heat applied from below to cook, craft, tan, render or otherwise combine items placed inside them. It is required to progress in the tech tree.

When placed directly above fire (from a Campfires, lit Netherrack or powered Hibachis) the Cauldron slowly process any valid recipes in its inventory, one at a time. This allows large quantities of items to be left in in a cauldron for processing, and come back later to collect them in their completed form.

Its steep Iron cost makes it quite an investment, but a very valuable one, since it also unlocks many new recipes that allows the player to multiply its Food by combining them.

To improve cooking/processing time, you can add up to 8 adjacent or diagonal fires next to the central one.

More advanced recipes for rendering items down require the fire underneath the Cauldron to be stoked, which is achieved only with Hibachis and Bellows. When Bellows receive an alternating signal of Mechanical Power, the air they blow will increase the heat of Hibachi fire. Reactions requiring a regular flame, such as cooking or boiling, will not proceed when it is heated by a stoked flame. It should be noted that a cauldron with a stoked flame will be hot enough to detonate explosive substances such as Gunpowder or Hellfire Dust, causing local damage and for the Cauldron to be lost.

The Cauldron can be tipped by application of Mechanical Power. When tipped, all items in the Cauldron will spill onto the block clockwise along - when facing the pot - the axle providing power to the Cauldron.

Usage

The Cauldron is the best way to cook Food, and the final upgrade from the Campfire and the Brick Oven.

It can cook food the fastest, and once you have access to the Nether and Netherrack, doesn't require any fuel.

Initially, the Cauldron can be fueled by a lit Campfire placed below, and up to 9 campfires can be used to speed up the cooking time, at the cost of a lot of fuel.

Once the player has a Diamond Pickaxe and can access the Nether, Netherrack can be used instead of a campfire, which removes the fuel requirement.

Finally, Hibachis can be used in combination with Bellows, to produce stoked fire and unlock different recipes.

Example

The first way to use a cauldron, using
Campfires and requiring fuel.
More fire, up to 9,
means faster cooking.
Using Netherrack for infinite fire
and no fuel required.
Using Bellows and a Turntable
to make stoked fire and unlock new recipes.

Cooking Time

The formula for calculating cook times (in ticks, 1 second = 20 ticks) is:

T = 4350 / (5 + 3 * (#fires - 1))

Number of
fire
Cooking time
in ticks
Cooking time
in seconds
1 870 ticks 43.5 seconds
2 544 ticks 27.2 seconds
3 396 ticks 19.8 seconds
4 311 ticks 15.55 seconds
5 256 ticks 12.8 seconds
6 218 ticks 10.9 seconds
7 190 ticks 9.5 seconds
8 168 ticks 8.4 seconds
9 150 ticks 7.5 seconds

To put it simply, 6 fires cook twice as fast as a single fire, and 9 fires cook twice as fast at 6 fires (4x as fast as 1 fire)

Applications

Unstoked Flame Cooking

Cauldrons can cook anything that a Brick Oven can cook, with the exception of Bricks, Nether Bricks, or baked goods like Pumpkin Pie, Bread or Cake, which can instead be cooked in a Kiln instead.

There are also many new Cauldron-specific recipes for more advanced Food types.

Keep in mind

  • If Dung is cooked alongside food in the Cauldron, Foul Food will be produced, effectively ruining the food. Avoid tanning Leather and cooking at the same time!
  • Lava will not heat the Cauldron.
  • Do NOT use Bellows to stoke the fire under a Cauldron containing Hellfire Dust or any other explosives.
  • The Cauldron can be smelted in the Crucible into 42 Iron Nuggets.
